| As a homebirth Midwife it is important and necessary to be humble, pay attention and stay in the moment. I have been attending births for more than thirteen years. I followed my homebirth apprenticeship with internships in a high volume birth center and a Jamaican hospital, which solidified my midwifery skills. In these settings, resources and pre-natal care were limited. As a result I developed the ability to discern the difference between a woman who is in an uncomfortable situation, and a woman who is in an unsafe situation. I apply my training in Ayurveda and the elemental theories to support clients in their ongoing health during pregnancy and postpartum. My approach to the practice of homebirth midwifery is not just theory. I have given birth to two sons. My first birth was a cesarean delivery and my second a homebirth VBAC. My personal experience has given me the trust and understanding of the power, struggle, grace and amazing transformation that occurs for babies, women and families at birth. |
Colette Mercier is a Licensed Midwife (LM) and Birth Doula, specializing in home birth and hospital labor support. Colette went to her first birth in 2003 and was so moved that she enrolled in a doula training that weekend. This training led her to study midwifery. She apprenticed at the Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center in Taos, NM and graduated from the National College of Midwifery in 2006. Colette has attended births with a diverse population of women, including volunteering as a midwife in the Philippines. She brings insight into how culture, expectations and the mind/body connection can shape a woman’s experience of birth. She is committed to empowering parents with nutritional counseling, prenatal education and informed consent, believing that the parents know what is best for their baby and family. Colette works with clients emotionally, spiritually and physically,so that the babies have as joyful and gentle beginnings as possible. Colette is also a Certified Ayurvedic Practioner and has studies with Deanna Batdorf at the Dhyana Center of Health Sciences. For more information visit www.colettemercier.net |
| In early 2004 I attended a friend's birth and felt my life change. I started working immediately as a Postpartum Doula where I help new families get to know eachother, and ease the transititon so all there is to do is fall in love. This has grown to a speacialty in supporting families with multiples. After that same birth I began studying midwifery right away. I completed Elizabeth Davis' Heart and Hands Intensives later that year. I trained in a homebirth apprenticeship locally as well as in a high volume birth center on the Texas-Mexico border. I did my academic studies with The National Midwifery Institute. I believe that birth is a natural process, and that the most effective way for women to birth is to step into their power. While we are well trained midwives, our primary job is to create the space you need and the support necessary for you to birth powerfully. One of the things that I love about Mama Love Midwifery is that because there are three of us, there is plenty of support for our clients' needs to be met. We choose to work in a team of three as away of practicing from an abundant energetic place. tidbit: AManda drew what was to become our logo for the first time about five years before it became "Mama Love". |
